Why Roadtrip?

People often say to me "Hey, Sonny, you're a dog (or something like that)! Why do you need to take roadtrips? Can't you just play fetch some more and be happy?" Now, it is true that I like fetch. Okay, I LOVE fetch. But even for a dog like me, nothing compares to the open road. I'm only two years old, and I've already seen the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. I've seen Mount Rushmore, Devil's Tower, the Las Vegas Strip, and the Hollywood Sign. I've stood outside the football stadiums of Notre Dame, Michigan, Wisconsin, BYU - I even marked my territory outside of Ford Field in Detroit (no offense to the Lions)! I mean, most people haven't even done this stuff, and I'm only a dog! Aside from that, I played hide and seek with Willie the pit bull in Boston, chased a cute poodle around a rest stop in New Jersey, kissed a dachsund in an elevator in Los Angeles, and walked in the park with about 1000 other dogs to raise money for homeless pets in Salt Lake City. I'm making friends out there! Not only do I not have to sit with the luggage like I would if I was traveling by plane or boat, I also get to feel the wind in my fur, see all the wonders the country has to offer, and snag the occassional french fry that gets dropped in transit. I tell you, this is the life. Roadtripping rules!

Sonny the Frog?

With summer pretty much here, I am discovering some new and interesting things. Having spent the only other summer I can really remember in Los Angeles, I have never really experienced the natural things like those that can be found at my Utah home. One thing I really like: bugs. They crawl, they squirm, and best of all, they fly. I can spend hours chasing the flying insects around in the grass. It's as close to the primitive hunting rituals of my ancestors as I've ever come. And I love it!

The highlight of my new bug hobby happened last night. A fly actually got into the house! Oh, I was on him right away. I stalked him all around. He flew into the kitchen, I was there. He flew into the living room, I was there. I chased this little guy from room to room for a good ten minutes. I wasn't going to let him get away. It was when he flew over the couch and landed on the wall when I saw my chance. Like a flash, I was up on the couch, my paws barely hitting the cushions. I sprang into the air just as that fly tried to get away - but it was too late! I snapped - and caught him in my mouth!

Boy was I proud as I chomped happily on the bug. He really didn't taste that good, but, hey, I eat dirty socks! I'm just proud that those wild dog instincts inside of me still exist, even though I live the cushy lap dog life (and can use a computer). All I have to say is Bugs Beware! Swamp frogs have got nothing on me.

Sonny's First Post

Hello! My name is Sonny. Yes, I am a dog. But not just ANY dog - a roadtrippin' dog! Beginning in February 2006, I am hitting the road with my mom, traveling around the United States to see the sights, check out nature, and meet all kinds of people and pets along the way. I am starting this blog now to talk about my trip planning, fundraising, and general dog thoughts. Then, when my roadtrip starts, I will post updates about my trip so you can follow me across the U.S.A! So, I hope you will enjoy reading. If you are a pet who reads blogs, send me your pet comments. If you are a pet parent, send me your travel anecdotes or advice on traveling with a pet. Thanks for checking me out!
